A political life built through news

From revolution to regional reconciliation

After independence Malik served in representative bodies, political parties and diplomacy. As foreign minister from 1966, he helped end Konfrontasi with Malaysia and joined counterparts from four neighbouring states in signing the Bangkok Declaration. ASEAN made reconciliation and regular cooperation part of Southeast Asian statecraft.

The United Nations and vice presidency

Malik was elected president of the twenty-sixth session of the UN General Assembly in 1971, reflecting Indonesia’s return to active multilateral diplomacy. He later chaired the national legislature and served as vice president from 1978 to 1983, occasionally voicing criticism from inside the New Order establishment.
