A political career built after exile

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. entered provincial office during his father’s presidency and left the country with his family after the 1986 People Power Revolution. He returned to elected politics in 1992 and built a long career as Ilocos Norte representative, governor and senator.

He narrowly lost the 2016 vice-presidential election to Leni Robredo. Marcos challenged the result, but the Presidential Electoral Tribunal dismissed the protest for lack of merit in 2021. Over the same period, the family rebuilt its national coalition and made the public memory of the Marcos era part of a renewed struggle for political legitimacy.

A family restoration at Malacañang

Running on a message of unity, Marcos won the 2022 presidential election with the largest vote total recorded for a Philippine presidential candidate. His victory restored the Marcos family to the office from which it had been removed thirty-six years earlier.

His administration has emphasised infrastructure, food security, investment and administrative digitalisation while strengthening defence ties with the United States and asserting Philippine maritime claims in the West Philippine Sea. The presidency remains inseparable from debate over martial-law memory, recovered assets and the responsibilities of a political heir toward the documented record of his father’s rule.
