A life formed through performance
Prince Norodom Sihamoni left Cambodia as a child to study in Prague. He specialised in music, ballet and theatre and later pursued cinematography in North Korea, an unusual artistic education for a future monarch.
After the fall of Democratic Kampuchea he settled in France, where he taught classical dance and created performance work. From the 1990s he represented Cambodia at UNESCO, linking artistic practice with the international recovery of Cambodian culture.
An elected constitutional king
Cambodia’s throne is elective within eligible royal lineages. When Norodom Sihanouk abdicated in 2004, the Royal Council of the Throne chose Sihamoni, who was crowned on 29 October.
The constitution places executive authority in elected government, so the king’s work is primarily ceremonial, social and cultural. Sihamoni’s restrained public style has kept attention on national representation and continuity rather than personal political rule.
