Proclaiming a state before invasion
Amaral emerged from rural and seminary education to help create ASDT after Portugal’s 1974 revolution opened a rapid decolonisation process. ASDT became FRETILIN, and Amaral chaired the movement as rivalry with UDT and Indonesian intervention destabilised the territory.
On 28 November 1975 he read the declaration of independence and became the first president. The Indonesian invasion on 7 December forced the new government and much of the population into the interior.
Conflict within the resistance and democratic return
Political disputes inside FRETILIN led to Amaral’s removal and imprisonment by the movement. He was later captured by Indonesian forces and spent much of the occupation away from open resistance leadership.
After the 1999 referendum, he re-established ASDT and contested the 2002 and 2007 presidential elections. The independent state recognised him as the proclaimer of independence and first president, while his biography also preserves the resistance’s unresolved internal conflicts.
