Education, finance and the Asian financial crisis
Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno was born in Pekanbaru in 1969 and studied business in the United States, graduating from Wichita State University before completing an MBA at George Washington University. He worked in banking and investment roles in Indonesia and overseas, including at Bank Summa, Seapower Asia Investment and NTI Resources. The experience gave him a professional identity grounded in finance rather than the military, bureaucracy or party machines that produced many senior politicians.
The Asian financial crisis transformed that path. As businesses failed and employment contracted, Sandiaga moved into restructuring and entrepreneurship. He co-founded Recapital and later Saratoga Investama Sedaya with Edwin Soeryadjaya, building interests across natural resources, infrastructure and consumer sectors. His public profile grew through business organisations, especially HIPMI, where he served as national chair from 2005 to 2008.
From entrepreneur to Jakarta City Hall
Sandiaga entered electoral politics with Gerindra and ran alongside Anies Baswedan in Jakarta’s 2017 governor election. The ticket defeated incumbent Basuki Tjahaja Purnama after a campaign shaped by urban inequality, housing promises and intense religious mobilisation. Sandiaga presented himself as a practical economic manager focused on jobs, prices and small enterprise.
As deputy governor, he promoted the OK OCE entrepreneurship programme and worked on transport, markets and preparations for the 2018 Asian Games. His tenure lasted less than a year. In August 2018 he resigned to join Prabowo Subianto’s national ticket, trading an executive role in the capital for a campaign that placed his business record and energetic public style before voters across the archipelago.
The 2019 vice-presidential campaign
Prabowo and Sandiaga campaigned on employment, food prices, debt and greater national control of economic resources. Sandiaga visited markets and small businesses, using a younger image and extensive social-media communication to complement Prabowo’s security and nationalist profile. He also committed substantial personal resources to the campaign, reinforcing debate about wealth and access in candidate selection.
The ticket received 68,650,239 votes, or 44.50 per cent, against 55.50 per cent for Joko Widodo and Ma’ruf Amin. Prabowo and Sandiaga challenged the result in the Constitutional Court, which rejected their petition. The defeat did not leave them permanently outside government: Prabowo joined Jokowi’s cabinet in October 2019, while Sandiaga followed in a different portfolio in December 2020.
Tourism recovery and the creative economy
Jokowi appointed Sandiaga minister of tourism and creative economy while the COVID-19 pandemic had closed borders and damaged hotels, aviation, events and informal livelihoods. His ministry promoted domestic travel, digital marketing, health protocols and support for small creative businesses as destinations reopened. He regularly framed tourism policy around employment and the quality rather than only the volume of visitors.
Sandiaga served until October 2024, spanning emergency relief and recovery. The appointment completed an unusual movement from opposition running mate to coalition minister and illustrated Indonesia’s flexible post-election alliances. It also gave him administrative responsibility for a sector whose benefits and pressures are unevenly distributed, from Bali’s concentrated tourism economy to newer destinations receiving major infrastructure investment.
