Building abroad, then returning
Serge Pun left Burma as military socialism restricted private business and later founded Serge Pun & Associates in Hong Kong in 1983. He returned in 1991 and established First Myanmar Investment the following year.
The group expanded across property, automobiles, tourism and financial services. Yoma Bank, founded in 1993, became one of the country’s largest private banks, while related companies linked domestic projects to international partners.
Two exchanges and a transition economy
Yoma Strategic Holdings listed in Singapore in 2006 and FMI became the Yangon Stock Exchange’s first listed company in 2016. Those milestones made Pun a prominent advocate of formal corporate governance in a market where ownership and regulation have often been opaque.
His career should be read within Myanmar’s uneven political economy: private investment expanded under military and quasi-civilian governments, but sanctions, banking limits and renewed conflict repeatedly changed the operating environment. He ceased serving as Yoma Strategic’s executive chairman in July 2024.
