A football family and an early debut
Fandi Ahmad grew up in a football household; his father, Ahmad Wartam, had represented Singapore as a goalkeeper. Fandi entered the national team at seventeen and quickly became known for movement, control and goals across attacking roles.

His move to FC Groningen in 1983 made him one of the few Singaporeans to establish a career in European professional football.
