Journalism and a public voice

Yusof Ishak was born in Perak and educated in Singapore. He built his early career in journalism, then helped establish Utusan Melayu in 1939 as a Malay-owned newspaper. As managing director and later editor, he supported a publication that gave Malay readers and writers a stronger institutional voice.

A head of state for self-government

After chairing Singapore’s Public Service Commission, Yusof became Yang di-Pertuan Negara in December 1959. The office represented the new constitutional order of internal self-government. He remained head of state when Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963 and when it separated in 1965.

The presidency and national symbolism

On independence, Yusof became the republic’s first president. The office was largely ceremonial, but his Malay identity and public presence carried particular importance in a diverse city-state confronting communal tension. His portrait remains on Singapore banknotes, keeping his association with the founding period visible in everyday life.
