War, law and political conviction
David Marshall trained as a lawyer and served in the Singapore Volunteer Corps before becoming a prisoner of war after the Japanese invasion. He later built a celebrated courtroom career and entered politics during a period of labour unrest, decolonisation and widening electoral participation.
Singapore’s first chief minister
The 1955 Rendel Constitution created an elected majority in the Legislative Assembly but left defence, foreign affairs and internal security under British control. Marshall’s Labour Front emerged as the largest party, making him chief minister of an energetic but constitutionally constrained government.
Failed talks and a long public afterlife
Marshall led an all-party mission to London in 1956, but disagreement over control of internal security prevented a settlement. He resigned and later founded the Workers’ Party. After leaving electoral politics, he served as Singapore’s ambassador to France and other European states, combining criticism at home with representation abroad.
