A Javanese artist in European academies

Born around 1811 into a Javanese aristocratic family, Raden Saleh studied first with the Belgian painter Antoine Payen. He travelled to the Netherlands in 1829 and remained in Europe for more than two decades, learning Romantic landscape and history painting while navigating elite patronage as a colonial subject.

Between two art worlds

Raden Saleh became known for theatrical scenes of animals, storms and hunts and received recognition in Dutch and German courts. His success made him one of the earliest artists from Southeast Asia to build a sustained reputation inside European art institutions.

Reframing the arrest of Diponegoro

The 1857 painting The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro answered an earlier Dutch representation of the event. Raden Saleh removed the triumphant colonial hierarchy, placed Diponegoro and General De Kock at the same level and made the prince’s followers central to the emotional scene. Later viewers have read the work as a foundational image of Indonesian historical consciousness, while scholars continue to debate its politics.
