An artist of Hanoi’s streets
Bùi Xuân Phái trained at the Indochina Fine Arts College from 1941 to 1945, part of the institution’s final generation. He worked through revolution, war and material scarcity, often adapting to whatever surfaces and pigments were available.
The Hanoi Old Quarter became his most persistent subject. Narrow façades, tiled roofs and quiet streets appear not as architectural surveys but as compressed spaces of memory, melancholy and everyday continuity. The paintings became so recognisable that Vietnamese audiences called them “Phố Phái,” or “Phái Streets.”
Beyond the Old Quarter
Phái also painted portraits, still lifes, rural scenes and performers from chèo, Vietnam’s traditional popular theatre. These works reveal the same expressive line and interest in figures living inside fragile cultural spaces.
He died in 1988 and received the Hồ Chí Minh Prize posthumously in 1996. Later exhibitions and collections have made him a central figure in modern Vietnamese art, but his strongest legacy remains the way one painter changed how a city imagines its own older streets.
