The youth team that reached a World Cup
Aung Thu developed at the Mandalay football academy and joined Yadanarbon in 2013. At the 2014 AFC U-19 Championship, his attacking play helped the host nation reach the semi-finals and qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
That was Myanmar’s first appearance at a FIFA World Cup at any age level. In New Zealand in 2015, Aung Thu scored against the host team, giving him a prominent place in the country’s modern football story even though Myanmar lost the match.
A regional professional route
He became a senior international and moved to Police Tero in 2018. Further spells with Thai clubs, including Muangthong United and Buriram United, placed him in a more commercial and competitive league than Myanmar could provide.
