Shoemaking as a family craft
Jimmy Choo was born in Penang in 1948 into a family of shoemakers. He learned by observing and working beside his father, making his first pair of shoes when he was about twelve.
The training was practical and exacting: pattern, fit, balance and hand finishing mattered before fashion publicity entered the story. That grounding remained central to the way Choo later described a shoe as an individual piece of craft.
An East London atelier
Choo moved to London and graduated from Cordwainers Technical College in 1983. He opened his own atelier in the East End later in the decade, producing couture footwear for private clients.
British Vogue devoted a major feature to his work in 1988. Editorial exposure and relationships with performers and royalty turned a small workshop into an internationally recognised name without removing the made-to-measure craft at its centre.
The person and the global brand
In 1996 Choo co-founded a ready-to-wear company that brought his name to a wider market. The label grew through shoes associated with red carpets, fashion publishing and popular culture, while his niece Sandra Choi became a major creative force in the design studio.
Choo sold his stake and left the company in 2001. The distinction matters: the luxury house continued to expand, while Jimmy Choo the shoemaker returned to couture commissions and the teaching of craft.
Recognition and design education
Malaysia recognised Choo with the title Dato, and Britain appointed him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. London College of Fashion later named him an honorary fellow.
His long-term influence lies partly in what his biography makes visible: a global fashion identity can begin with technical apprenticeship, patient handwork and a migrant workshop before it becomes a corporate brand.
