Choosing a national-team path
Đặng Văn Lâm grew up in Moscow with a Vietnamese father and Russian mother, training in the youth systems of Spartak and Dynamo Moscow. His ambition, however, was to represent Vietnam, and he persisted through unsettled early club years in Southeast Asia.
A move to Hải Phòng gave him regular football. After joining the national set-up in 2016, he kept a clean sheet against Jordan in his 2017 senior debut and established himself as Vietnam’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Regional champion and Asian pioneer
Văn Lâm anchored Vietnam’s 2018 AFF Championship win, allowing only two goals across eight matches. At the 2019 Asian Cup, he helped the team reach the quarter-finals after a penalty shootout victory over Jordan.
He moved first to Muangthong United in Thailand, then joined Cerezo Osaka in 2021. That transfer made him the first Vietnamese player attached to a J1 League club and showed how a goalkeeper’s career could open a different route abroad.
