Trần Hiếu Ngân opened Vietnam’s Olympic medal history with taekwondo silver at Sydney 2000. Hoàng Anh Tuấn followed in Beijing as the country’s first male medallist, proving that the lightweight weightlifting programme could also reach the podium.
Trần Lê Quốc Toàn initially left London 2012 in fourth place. Eight years later, the IOC reallocated bronze to him after the original medallist’s disqualification, changing both his official result and Vietnam’s national tally.
Hoàng Xuân Vinh created Vietnam’s defining Olympic moment at Rio 2016: the first gold medal, followed by silver in a second pistol event. His two medals make him the country’s most decorated Olympian by total medals.
